The rating scale measures the type of social impairment that is characteristic of autistic spectrum conditions in children aged 4-18. It assesses social awareness, social information processing, capacity for reciprocal social communication, social anxiety/avoidance, and autistic preoccupations and traits.

Social Responsiveness Scale measures impairment on a quantitative scale across a wide range of severity. This allows comparisons across settings and against norms established with different assessors. Mental health professional can use the scores to achieve consensus about where a child falls within the range of impairment encompassed by autistic spectrum conditions.
