The OWLS: Listening Comprehension and Oral Expression Scale is a measure of receptive language. Using a convenient portable easel, the examiner reads a verbal stimulus aloud, whilst the pupil responds by indicating to a picture on the pupil's side of the easel. Correct responses are then indicated on the examiner's side of the easel and on the record form.

The accompanying OWLS: Oral Expression (OE) Scale measures expressive language, with pupils answering a question, completing a sentence or generating sentences in response to a visual/verbal stimulus.
